COUNTERBIAS BRIEF *** APR 14 2004 *** Last
Update: Apr 14 President George W. Bush, in his 13 April 2004 televised press conference, made it clear that he felt all races and nationalities should be free and self-governed. Referring to those who doubt his plans for Iraqi autonomy and self-governing democracy, President Bush said that "the debate really centers around the fact that people don't believe Iraq can be free; that if you're Muslim, or perhaps brown-skinned, you can't be self-governing and free. I strongly disagree with that." It is assumed that most critics of the the Bush Administration's Iraq policy would reject the assumptions that they are racist and that they doubt a democratic Iraq simply because of the color of the Iraqi people's skin. This is not the first time that the Bush family has been embroiled in a skin-tone controversy. In 2000, George Bush Senior referred to his son George W's nephew, George P. Bush and his siblings, all of whom are half Mexican, as "the little brown ones".
