COUNTERBIAS BRIEF *** MAR 15 2004 *** Last
Update: Mar 15 New York's Third Congressional District Congressman, Peter T. King, is under fire for a letter sent to at least one of his constituents. The recipient of the letter in question, a resident of Nassau, New York, first called his Republican Congressman's office to suggest that he "censure" his colleague, President George W. Bush. In a written letter, Mr. King responded in a tone uncharacteristic of an individual holding such high office, writing that he disagreed with his constituent "in every respect". "You are morally, intellectually and politically wrong", King followed. Mr. King then invoked religion, making it clear how he felt about President Bush: "Like Ed Koch I thank God every night that he is our President. You should do the same." Just last month, King was embroiled in another controversy when he described Muslim leaders in America as "an enemy living amongst us" (radio show, 9 February 2004). The main text of the letter in question is included below: I
understand that you recently contacted my office requesting that I vote
to censure President Bush. It is uncertain whether the letter was written by the Congressman or one of his staffers, although it was signed in pen by King himself. Mr. King's website is house.gov/king; his e-mail is Pete.King@mail.house.gov.
