Regattas of oil drops
Just got finished watching my beloved Edmonton Oilers win their fifth straight playoff game, and I come upon this coinkydink.
Dean Bennett, Canadian Press/Montreal Gazette:
Alan Adams, FOX Sports:
Can someone explain this coincidental similarity to me? Does this happen regularly in sports journalism, and is it acceptable?
Dean Bennett, Canadian Press/Montreal Gazette:
Oilers flags fly from homes, restaurants and bars. So many vehicles sport flags that parking lots resemble regattas of oil drops.Seven hours later (according to Google News)...
Alan Adams, FOX Sports:
Needless to say, but Edmontonians (as they are called) have gone gaga over their hockey heroes. Oilers flags fly from homes, restaurants and bars. So many cars and trucks sport flags that parking lots resemble regattas of oil drops.Replace "vehicles" with "cars and trucks," and bam, it's now your lovely prose, and your readers feel like they're there while you clearly weren't.
Can someone explain this coincidental similarity to me? Does this happen regularly in sports journalism, and is it acceptable?

On "The Daily Show" last night they showed a sports reporter from NBC commenting on the Kentucky Derby with some lofty prose. Then they cut to a clip from "The West Wing" from a couple of years ago where the EXACT same lines had been used in a speech by "President" Bartlett. Sports journalism... isn't that an oxymoron?
It seems like journalist these days are "borrowing" from all over and I don't just mean sports journalist either. I believe you are right Red it is a oxymoron.:)
