So poor, so black, so Blitzer

A Wolf Blitzer faux pas: Video.

I won't call Wolf a racist, because it appears this was some sort of misspeak on his part -- but still, how does someone possibly say that a group of people is "so black" without meaning it in a negative way, even with their head somewhere else?

No, Wolf isn't racist. He's just a journalist with his mind lost in thoughts concerning how to keep from accidentally altering the tone of his voice, and how best not to ruffle any government feathers while appearing "hard-hitting" and "journalistic" (à la Tim Russert). So verbal slips like this, although rare for Blitzer, shouldn't come as a surprise.

I don't think Wolf is a stone racist. Unfortunately, we have plenty of them to observe and he's different, just sort of clueless. Not that people like him aren't part of the problem. I do think he has been truly affected, emotionally, by this event, as have many of them, but the question is will they continue to report real news about real people, and also have real opinions that are not preordained from WH press releases. They could make such a difference if they kept it up. What are the odds?

Tsk- Tsk.
All this politically correct outrage over Blitzer's so-poor-so-black comment.
Anybody who's listened to the Blues
of the Delta these past fifty years will get an uncanny sense that the riff will finally be heard
by a guy like Blitzer. These people lived with the pathos of everyday life, and now a pathos so palpable.
Blitzer spoke like one of them fellow Americans, who,in the words
of Oscar Brown Jr., were born "So black and blue."

anyone who calls wolf a racist is an idiot. we all make mistakes.

as an immigrant whose family wasn't even here for slavery, wolf is the last person i'd concern myself with when it comes to negative racism.

How would any of you know if that "goof" was in any way and indication of his racist or views or lack their of for that fact? You're arguing whether a man none of you have ever met or know personally is a racist! Am I the only one that thinks you are all awfully high on yourselves to even begin to think you have any idea or any possible logical way of KNOWING the answer to that? Wolf Blitzer could be a closet member of the KKK or the NAACP for all we know! It could go either way and I promise you he'd never announce it on CNN.

Calling him a racist makes you an idiot? Saying you "know" he isn't makes you an idiot too unless you know the man personally and intimatly!!!! Where he is from is neither here nor there either! I guess Europeans couldn't POSSIBLY be racists? I lived in Europe and that's a joke!

Wolfgang von Blitzer?
No. Not likely.Probably quite the opposite. And his family would know
all about racism.

I've heard the soundbite over and over again, and I don't think he's consciously racist; I think in his own mind the word "black" translates as another word for "poor". It's still not an excuse though. It's just another sign that the thin veneer of what we call "civilization" is really thinner-than-paper-thin than anyone ever suspected it was, we're still just slightly smarter animals.

Screw that leave Blitzer alone. Blacks say whites are "So white" all the time.

It's a two way street. If they percieve that as negative then that's their own problem. If someone says I'm "so white" that's fine because I am and I am proud of who I am.

I'm using 'anonymous' because it's quicker than registering, and I don't have a lot of time.

I agree with catherine; just plain clueless, in a condescending, stereotypical way. "Black" implies "poor" in the stereotype, right? Never mind that there are black doctors, lawyers, engineers, etc., and that some blacks are conservative, some Republican; gee, just like real people, y'know?
A man who uses words for a living in front of millions, ostensibly to give us the facts, should always think about what he's SAYING, and not about getting just the right facial expression, how he looks on camera, or if the tone of his voice conveys the correct amount of concern, pathos, or whatever. He's a newscaster, not an actor. If he wants to act, he should go to Broadway.

Ah c'mon.
I think Blitzer has a little soul.

offed by Adolph Hitler and not have soul.

The absurdity of the comment is curious, from a logical perspective. I think it betrays more about the motives behind news commentary, the impulse to always have something to say leading to gibbering idiocy. Slip of the tongue or revealing error--either way, it demonstrates that the unintended signficance of comments such as these generates speculation and reaction. Newscasters, I think, should be extremely careful with the exact formulation of their thoughts and observations. That they feel compelled to offer a soundtrack of endless commentary that bleeds into nattering inanity demonstrates how news has become a form of entertainment.

When a liberal makes a comment like this one, it is a slip of the tongue. When a conservative says the same it is racist. It is that simple. That is how you know, if it was a slip or he meant it. Ask 85% of journalists.

Racism is a doctrine of Socialists -- political factions that choose some arbitrary binder like their skin color ("blacks"), language (Hispanics"), genitals ("feminists") perversion ("political homosexuals") or culture (judaism).

These Racists then attack their hated bogeyman ("WASP" -- 'white', Anglo-Saxon Protestant) who they perceive as "deep-pocketed".

Socialists are clever to label their hated as the racist, when it is they who are the racists.

It sounded to me like he was going for an alliterative effect: so this, so that... editing in his head as he went along and likely meant to say so many are black, but shortened it.

My two cents

Okay, I have to say this. I am pretty darn black, and I was not offended by Wolf's comments. It may be that I was so outraged by what the governmenbt was doin - or actually not ding - in New Orleans for my fellow black people, that I was happy that a White man would have the guts to actually point out the racial aspect of the situation : Most of those affected were Black, and disproportionately so. Now in hindsight, Wolf Blitzer could have chosen better wording, and I leave to more adept anthropo-analysts the task of figuring out whether that is a sign of hidden racism. who knows, maybe it is a duck that we are seeing...

Regardless, I wanted to answer one of the anonymous comments, about Socialists being Racists. The simple fact that you make this comment proves that (1) you know ittle about socialism and (2) you are trying to justify a whole range of bigotries that White culture has harbored, by deflecting to some other group.

I mean, unless I am mistaken, Socialists - as a group - did not come up with the concepts of White Supremacy, Manifest Destiny, Black subhumanity (3/5 of a human), Race based slavery, Jim Crow and Apatheid, Aryan Nation, Blue bloods, the Holocaust, and oh, the policies of King Leopold in my country the Congo. Bigoted White people did...
