Ask Me No Questions
A Supreme Court Justice musn't reveal to mere mortals the rationale for his or her actions… at least not before the final doom is pronounced

Centrifuge. Subterfuge. Refuge. All words that could be found in the vocals of a Bush fugue. The words and music are always the same.  The obsession remains. The melody lingers.

The Administration’s obsession with nuclear threats, real and imagined – not to mention its own grand design of a whole new range of tactical nuclear weapons – supplies the raison d’être for a good many national security schemes.  Schemes – well, there we have a Bushie forte. Ken Mehlman, Karl Rove, and the whole Neocon and religious right apparatus runs dissent through an atom smasher. Nothing goes out the way it comes in. Things are not only unrecognizable, but they are poisonous, and possess a life of their own, contaminating all with whom they make contact. And finally, there is refuge – that once golden notion equated with sanctuary and safety. In this case, the safety – the security – that is craved is of the kind that can only be found within the safety thick leaden walls – layer upon layer of impermeable lies and confusion.

Now another new element flies off into the noxious mix. It is an unknown quantity, one without record or paper trail. Well, not completely. The esteemed John Roberts has been a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit for a whole two years. Judge Roberts also has quite a long record of working on the other side of the bench, most notably under the Reagan and Bush I administrations. He is particularly well known for having filed a brief against Roe v. Wade – it was “wrongly decided.” But don’t blame the then Deputy Solicitor General – he was only following orders. In the 1991 case of Rust v. Sullivan[1], Roberts filed a brief that stated, “[w]e continue to believe that Roe was wrongly decided and should be overruled… The Court’s conclusion in Roe that there is a fundamental right to an abortion… finds no support in the text, structure, or history of the Constitution.”[2]

Judge Roberts knows all the ins and outs of the United States Constitution because, as George W. Bush (an expert on intelligence) has mentioned only about a thousand times since announcing Roberts’ nomination, John Roberts is an extremely intelligent man. No doubt, it was this overpowering brain power that Jeb Bush, George’s hard-shootin’ brother, availed himself of when John G. Roberts – at his own expense – flew down to Florida during the 2000 Presidential Elections to offer his “counsel.” The advice was so wonderful that, according to the New York Times, Governor Bush’s Press Secretary cannot even remember if Roberts was one of those who came to offer advice.[3]

Another case of Administration Alzheimer’s? Oh… wait a minute… oh yeah… I remember now… Jeb Bush is not in the Administration. He is only George W.’s impartial brother. Who in the White House is not of sound mind? Genius is a requirement to work in this West Wing. The more degrees the better! Dr. Moriarty where are you? Roberts received the ultimate stamp of approval from Cicero W. Bush: "He has the qualities that Americans expect in a judge: experience, wisdom, fairness and civility."[4]

Wisdom is sacred – like much else that is valued by the typical Bush diehard. One does not question He Who Speaks from on High. Soon, if all goes well, John Glover Roberts, Jr. will be majestically ensconced in the white-columned temple on the Hill. His judgments will be delivered with inspiration, clarity, and of course… fairness. So, while confirmation hearings are going on – and even before they begin – it is not necessary that anyone look too closely. Supreme Court justices do not decide by precedent – that’s “common” law. A justice’s thoughts and opinions should be kept to himself, closely concealed beneath those impenetrable black robes. Not a syllable should pass those august lips, not a hint of passion or prejudice – that would be pre-judice – as in deciding things before hand (Latin, one of the languages all superintelligent Bushii know, part of a list that includes Old Akkadian and Sanskrit).

A United State Supreme Court Justice is a superior order of being. He or she does not condescend to reveal to mere mortals the rationale for his or her actions… at least not before the final doom is pronounced. Civil and respectful, like King George’s nominee, Democratic, as well as Republican, senators must not ask any probing questions. It really doesn’t matter what you have written or said before, what groups you belong to, or parties you have attended. It does not even matter that your wife belongs to a staunchly anti-choice organization. Surely, she never discusses these things at the dinner table! And even if any of these “rumors” flying around Washington might appear to back up a certain line of belief lurking somewhere deep in the recesses of the illustrious jurist’s mind… well, that is none of your business!!! Yours is but to hear and obey.

Ask George Bush’s nominee no questions, and he will tell you no lies…
