The Library That Hate Built

A friend of mine, kind of a covert Democratic agent, regularly subscribes to the mailing lists of conservative hate groups, and has passed along this gem of a solicitation for the Counter Clinton Library, to be built on a site near the recently opened Clinton "liebrary." (And you thought psychopaths had no sense of humor.)

My favorite line of the letter refers not just to Bill, but his wife: "No two occupants of the White House have done more to desecrate that sacred building and to destroy the image of our nation." (Guess these guys haven't seen the news or traveled abroad for the past four years.)

The great thing about this country is that citizens have the freedom to launch a project like this. The sad thing about this country – lately – is that anyone would even consider it. But the hatred and polarization driven by the right have poisoned – perhaps permanently – any hope of civilized debate and common decency in our national discourse. As The Simpsons' Principal Skinner told Lisa while he was stealing another school's lab equipment, "Welcome to Dick Cheney's America."

Someday George W. Bush will be back on his ranch clearing brush, and his own official library will open with the fanfare that Clinton's did. (Will it include "My Pet Goat"?). I trust that our side will have the class not to bother raising money for some kind of sick monument commemorating the real Bush legacy.

There are already 1,238 markers in cemeteries across America doing that.

The solicitation in question:

Dear Fellow American,

I'm fed up. I can't take any more of the Clintons trying to rewrite history every single day in every single media outlet.

This week, you and I have witnessed a Clinton love-in that even the liberal media should be ashamed of. Bill and Hill have been given unlimited airtime to try to make us forget about their despicable record of lies, lawbreaking, and scandal.

As responsible citizens of the greatest democracy in the world, you and I cannot sit by idly and allow this to happen. That's why I'm asking for your support in opening the Counter Clinton Library.

You may already be familiar with our project. But in case you haven't heard about it, our Counter Clinton Library will be a permanent thorn in the side of the Clintons as they try to hide and distort their anti-American, anti-family, anti-military legacy.

Our goal: to let not one Clinton lie go unanswered, to let not one Clinton evasion go unquestioned and to let not one Clinton slander go unchallenged.

It is up to us -- regular Americans who care about the truth and about our country -- to build from scratch the first-ever counter library.

Unlike the Clintons, we are not trading favors and access to power in exchange for big donations. Instead, we are asking average Americans to contribute what they can -- $100 or $75 or $50 -- to build a permanent facility that will forever counter the lies and distortions spewing out of the Clinton Liebrary.

We also intend to feature voluminous research material -- from the Whitewater records to the Special Counsel's Report to the House Impeachment record -- which scholars can pore over for years to come to get the real truth about the Clintons. Certainly these unflattering records are not available down the street at Bill and Hillary's Liebrary.

But none of this can happen without the help of regular, average Americans -- like you.

We also will have access to never-before seen documents. For example, long-time Clinton insider Dick Morris has agreed to donate all his secret White House Agendas to the Counter Clinton Library. No one -- other than the Clintons themselves and Morris -- has ever seen these detailed plans of Morris' meetings with Bill Clinton as they wrote speeches together and plotted political strategy.

There has never been a President and First Lady like Bill and Hillary Clinton. No two occupants of the White House have done as much to desecrate that sacred building and to destroy the image of our nation.

The Counter Clinton Library will be dedicated to preserving and retelling the real story of the Clinton co-presidency -- instead of the spin and lies found in the "official" library.

Please help us build this library! We can tell the truth and build a monument to the Clintons' real legacy -- but only with your support.
